Solar garden lights can mark out paths, highlight flower beds or add a decorative touch to your balcony or patio without the need for power cables. However, claims such as ‘weatherproof’, long lighting times or particularly powerful solar panels don’t automatically mean a product is right for you. The best choice depends on where you’ll use it, how much sunlight it will get, its IP rating and the lighting effect you want.
The IP44 rating generally protects a product against solid objects 1 mm or larger, as well as splashing water from different directions. However, it doesn’t mean a solar light can be left standing in water or exposed to powerful jets of water. If you’re placing a light somewhere that often gets damp, position it so water can’t collect on the casing or solar panel.
A higher rating such as IP65 indicates greater protection against dust and water jets. The manufacturer’s specifications and installation instructions still apply. Even weatherproof solar lights shouldn’t be left underwater for extended periods.
Solar garden lights need enough direct sunlight during the day. Shade from house walls, trees or balcony canopies reduces the energy available for charging. Figures such as ‘8 to 12 hours’ or ‘8 to 14 hours’ should therefore be treated as guidelines for suitable conditions.
In autumn and winter, or when it’s very cloudy or the panels are dirty, the actual lighting time may be shorter. Positioning the panel where it gets plenty of sun and cleaning it regularly with a soft cloth can help keep charging conditions as consistent as possible.
Many solar garden lights are designed to create atmospheric accent lighting, not to illuminate a path evenly. Warm white solar lights at around 2700 K create a subtle, decorative effect. Cool white light at around 6500 K looks much brighter and more striking. Colour-changing solar lights are best suited to decorative displays, but may be less practical for steps or important walkways.
For lawns, flower beds and soft ground, solar ground lights or solar path lights with stakes are a good choice. Before buying, check that the stake’s height and diameter are suitable for the ground. A freestanding option may be more suitable for hard or stony surfaces.
Solar lights for balconies and patios need a stable base and a panel with as clear a view of the sky as possible. For solar string lights, check that the cable is long enough to reach from the solar panel to the area you want to decorate.
Built-in Ni-MH or lithium-ion batteries store the energy collected during the day. Always read the stated charging time alongside the expected lighting time. An automatic dusk sensor is common in many LED solar lights: the light switches on when it gets dark and off again in daylight.
Also check the instructions before using the light for the first time. Some models need to charge for several hours initially, or be left switched to ‘ON’ for the automatic controls to work.
Why this product suits you: This set of three lights is an easy way to mark out small flower beds, borders or short paths without needing any wiring.
Automatic dusk activation and cable-free installation make it easier to set up and use.
Three lights per set, no mains connection needed and automatic dusk control.
Why this product suits you: The warm white SMD LED and contemporary black plastic casing make this a subtle lighting choice for paths, flower beds or seating areas.
The stated warm white colour makes it easier to know what kind of lighting effect to expect than a vague description such as ‘ambient lighting’.
SMD LED, built-in 600-mAh Ni-MH battery and automatic on/off function.
Why this product suits you: Two solar string lights, each 8 metres long with 80 LEDs, are ideal for balconies, patios, fences, trees and seasonal decorations.
The IP65 rating, 6–8-hour charging time and weather-dependent lighting time are all clearly stated.
Eight lighting modes with memory function, 8 metres per string and automatic lighting for around 8–14 hours in suitable conditions.
Why this product suits you: Its RGB lighting and decorative bubble design add a splash of colour to lawns, flower beds and paths.
The colour feature is specifically described as RGB, rather than simply being called ‘mood lighting’.
RGB lighting, stake mounting, a charging time of around 4–6 hours and a stated lighting time of 8–12 hours.
We’ve put together a complete, regularly updated list of products that meet these strict selection criteria and fully comply with the safety regulations in force in the EU.
Their lifespan depends on the battery, LED, casing, sunlight and weather conditions. Some products are stated to have an LED lifespan of up to 15,000 hours. This shouldn’t be taken as a guarantee of the lifespan of the complete light. As batteries lose capacity, the light may stay on for less time at night.
The solar panel should get as much direct sunlight as possible and shouldn’t be shaded by trees, buildings or canopies. Stake lights should be placed in suitable soft soil or grass, with the panel facing upwards. Before using the light for the first time, follow the charging and switch-on instructions for your model.
Solar lights don’t need to be connected to the mains while they’re in use. They charge during the day through their built-in solar panel and store the energy in a rechargeable battery. The actual lighting time depends on sunlight, the time of year, battery condition and the product specifications.
