Solar LED String Lights for Outdoors: A Buying Guide for Gardens, Balconies and Terraces

Solar LED string lights for outdoors do not require a fixed power connection and can be attached flexibly to trees, railings or walls. However, models vary considerably in length, light colour, battery, solar panel and weather protection. If you focus only on the number of LEDs or an eye-catching product description, you may end up buying string lights that are too short for the intended location, go out early in cloudy weather or require the solar panel to be positioned incorrectly.

Common pitfalls when buying solar string lights

1. The stated length is not always the usable length

With solar string lights, part of the total length may be taken up by the lead cable between the solar panel and the first LED. For a balcony, pergola or tree, you should therefore check:

  • How long is the actual string of lights?
  • What is the distance between the LEDs?
  • Is there a separate lead cable to the sunny location of the solar panel?
  • Is the length sufficient for the area you want to cover, or will you need two sets?

Although copper wire string lights are easy to wrap around branches and railings, they should not be sharply bent or installed under tension.

2. “Waterproof” does not always apply to every component

The IP65 rating is an important parameter for waterproof string lights. The first digit, 6, indicates complete protection against dust, while the second digit, 5, indicates protection against water jets. However, this does not mean that the solar panel, battery compartment or entire electronic system can be submerged.

For the products mentioned here, it is particularly important to note that the IP65 rating applies to the specified components or to the string of lights. The solar panel and battery compartment should not be left sitting in water. Position the panel so that rainwater can run off, and avoid puddles or permanently wet hollows.

3. Runtime depends heavily on the location

Manufacturer specifications such as 8 to 14 hours of illumination apply under certain conditions. In autumn and winter, shorter days, clouds, shade and low temperatures can reduce charging performance. A panel in the shade of a balcony will charge much less effectively than a freely positioned panel exposed to several hours of direct sunlight.

For reliable solar garden lighting, you should therefore consider not only the stated runtime, but also the panel position, battery capacity and the season in which you want to use the lights.

Technical specifications you should compare

Light colour and number of LEDs

Warm white solar string lights create a calm, understated glow and are often well suited to seating areas, balconies or wedding decorations. Multicoloured solar string lights are more suitable for birthdays, Christmas decorations or seasonal celebrations.

The number of LEDs alone says little about brightness. The distance between the LEDs, their design and the way the light is distributed are also important. 50 larger globe LEDs can create a very different visual effect from 120 small LEDs on a thin wire.

Charging time and illumination duration

Pay attention to the combination of charging time and runtime. Depending on the product, the selected models specify around 4 to 8 hours of direct sunlight for charging. According to the product specifications, illumination lasts for up to 12 or 8 to 14 hours, depending on the weather.

For everyday use, the solar panel should:

  1. face as close to south as possible, or towards a comparably sunny direction,
  2. be free from leaves, dust and sources of persistent shade,
  3. be cleaned regularly with a soft, dry cloth.

Lighting modes and memory function

String lights with 8 modes offer a range of effects, including steady light, flashing, waves, slow fading and chasing light. A memory function can retain the last mode selected. However, check whether this feature is actually specified and whether the lights are operated using a switch or remote control.

Installing and caring for outdoor lights

Switch the string lights to “ON” before first use, if specified by the manufacturer. The panel should be positioned in an area that is as free from shade as possible, while the string itself is attached in the desired location. For safe use:

  • Do not run the cable over sharp edges or pull it too tightly.
  • Do not use the string lights underwater or in standing water.
  • Keep the solar panel and battery compartment dry and accessible.
  • Clean the panel regularly with a dry cloth.
  • Stop using products with damaged cables or housings.
  • Dispose of built-in batteries in accordance with local disposal requirements.

FAQ about solar LED string lights for outdoors

How long do solar string lights need to charge outdoors?

Depending on the model, around 4 to 8 hours of direct sunlight is specified. In cloudy weather, shade or winter, charging may take longer and illumination duration may decrease. A clear, clean location for the solar panel is therefore essential.

Can IP65 string lights be left out in the rain?

An IP65 rating protects the specified string of lights against dust and water jets. It should not be taken to mean protection against submersion. The solar panel and battery compartment should be protected from standing water and must not be placed in water.

Do solar-powered LED string lights use electricity from a socket?

No. Solar-powered LED string lights charge their integrated battery through the solar panel and do not require an external power connection during normal operation. Actual runtime depends on sunlight, battery condition, temperature and the selected lighting mode.
