Solar lights for the garden: a buying guide for paths, flower beds and outdoor spaces

Solar lights for the garden don’t need a mains connection and can usually be installed without any complicated assembly. However, not every solar garden light is right for every location. A small light for a flower bed has different requirements from a bright LED floodlight for a driveway or an outdoor wall light for a garage.

Typical buying mistakes stem from three misconceptions:

  • Runtime figures are taken as fixed: The stated lighting time usually applies under suitable charging conditions. Shade, short winter days, dirt and low temperatures can all affect actual runtime.
  • Decorative lighting is mistaken for security lighting: RGB solar lights or warm-white solar lights create atmosphere, but they’re no substitute for a powerful outdoor floodlight.
  • The IP rating isn’t checked: An IP44-rated light is protected against splashing water, but isn’t designed to be immersed in water. Uncovered areas may have different requirements.

Check these technical details before you buy

1. Choose the right light colour and brightness for the location

Colour temperature is measured in kelvin:

  • Warm white, around 2700 K: ideal for seating areas, patios, flower beds and decorative parts of the garden.
  • Neutral to daylight white, around 4000 to 6500 K: useful when you need a clear view of paths, garage entrances or work areas.
  • RGB: produces changing colours and is mainly suited to decorative accents.

For security lighting, lumens are also important. The higher the lumen rating, the more visible light the product gives off. A low-output decorative solar ground light, for example, isn’t comparable to a bright outdoor LED floodlight.

2. Match the IP rating and material to the installation location

The IP rating consists of two digits. The first describes protection against solid objects, while the second indicates protection against water. The products mentioned here range from IP44 to IP66:

  • IP44: protected against solid objects larger than 1 mm and splashing water.
  • IP54: limited dust protection and protection against splashing water.
  • IP66: dust-tight and protected against powerful water jets under the relevant test conditions.

The material matters too. A stainless-steel effect may be made from plastic, so it isn’t necessarily solid stainless steel. Aluminium housings with glass covers can be suitable for permanently installed outdoor lights, while lightweight solar lights with ground stakes are easier to move.

3. Consider the solar panel, battery and location

Many solar garden lights state a charging time of 4 to 6 hours and a lighting time of 8 to 12 hours. These figures depend on direct sunlight, positioning, the time of year and the condition of the battery. Don’t place the solar panel under trees, roof overhangs or tall plants.

For solar lights with ground stakes, the soil needs to be soft enough. Solar ground lights with a suitable recessed fitting, or permanently installed lights, are a better choice for hard or paved surfaces. Regularly cleaning the panel with a soft, damp cloth can help it charge effectively. Batteries must not be opened or burned, or replaced with unsuitable alternatives.

Frequently asked questions about solar lights for the garden

How long do solar lights stay on in the garden?

Runtime depends on sunlight, panel size, battery capacity, temperature and battery age. Several of the models mentioned are stated to provide 8 to 12 hours of light under suitable conditions. In winter or during prolonged cloudy spells, the lighting time may be shorter.

Where should solar lights be placed?

The solar panel should receive several hours of direct sunlight and, where possible, be kept out of the shade of trees, walls and roof overhangs. Solar lights with ground stakes should be placed in soft soil. Permanently installed outdoor LED lights are more suitable for driveways and façades, provided there’s a safe mains connection.

Do solar lights have ongoing electricity costs?

Solar lights draw power from their charged battery while in use, so they don’t need a direct mains connection. However, ongoing costs may arise if you need replacement batteries or damaged components. Follow local guidance when disposing of electrical equipment and batteries.
