Outdoor solar string lights can add decorative lighting to your garden, balcony, fence or patio without needing a mains connection. However, some details in product descriptions can easily lead to the wrong purchase. A longer string isn’t necessarily brighter, an IP rating doesn’t mean every component can be left underwater, and the stated lighting time depends heavily on the weather and where you place it.
There are three things you should check carefully before ordering:
Automatic dusk activation also only works if you’ve switched the lights on before using them for the first time. Keep the solar panel as clear as possible of dust, leaves and shade.
For weatherproof string lights used outdoors, look for a clear IP rating. For the models featured here, IP65 means protection against dust and water jets. Rain, damp air and splashes are typical conditions for outdoor use. Avoid puddles, standing water and submerging the lights.
For plug-in outdoor lights, connections should also be kept off the ground and protected from water. Ideally, place the solar panel somewhere it will receive several hours of direct sunlight.
Warm white string lights have a subtle look and often complement wood, natural stone and outdoor seating. Cool white light highlights edges more strongly and can work well on fences, windows or in modern outdoor spaces. Multi-colour string lights are better suited to birthdays, parties, Christmas or more eye-catching decorations.
Multiple modes, such as flashing, waves, slow fading or steady light, give you more choice for everyday use. A memory function can be useful if you want the lights to keep the last setting you selected.
Copper wire is flexible and can be wrapped around branches, railings, vases or plant supports. Even with copper wire string lights, take care not to bend the wire sharply. ABS plastic is often used for the housing and solar panel.
Solar power means there’s no cable to a plug socket and no ongoing mains connection for normal use. However, actual light output depends on battery capacity, sunlight, temperature and how clean the panel is. If you need especially consistent lighting for many hours, consider mains-powered models too.
Why it suits this profile: Two 8-metre strings are ideal for a balcony, smaller flower beds, windows or a short section of fence. The cool white light is crisp and versatile.
The product details list the length, number of LEDs, charging time, lighting time and IP65 rating separately, making it easier to judge how much area the lights will cover.
80 LEDs per string, eight lighting modes with a memory function, and solar power with a built-in rechargeable battery.
Why it suits this profile: This 45-metre string is designed for patios, larger gardens, balconies or event spaces where continuous lighting is needed.
The length and number of G40 bulbs are clearly stated. However, don’t mistake the IP65 rating for protection against submersion.
Warm white LEDs, dimmable lights, replaceable bulbs and a stated option to connect up to 500 bulbs in total.
Why it suits this profile: These two 12-metre strings with multi-colour LEDs are a good fit for outdoor Christmas lights, garden parties, birthdays, weddings and seasonal decorations.
Each longer string has 120 LEDs. This makes it easier to judge the coverage from both the length and the number of points of light.
Eight modes, a memory function, an IP65 rating and automatic switching on and off when there’s enough charge.
If possible, position the solar panel facing the sunnier side and avoid leaving it in constant shade from walls or dense plants. A soft, dry cloth is all you need to clean it. Avoid harsh cleaning products and don’t submerge the panel.
Arrange the lights to avoid creating trip hazards. Keep small parts and wire out of the reach of children unless supervised. If you won’t be using the lights for a while, it may be a good idea to switch them off and store them somewhere dry. For string lights for a patio or wedding, also take account of escape routes, walkways and flammable materials.
We’ve put together a complete, regularly updated list of products that meet these strict selection criteria and fully comply with the safety regulations in force in the EU.
The models mentioned specify around 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight for charging. Clouds, short winter days, shade and a dirty panel can all reduce the available lighting time.
The IP65 rating provides protection against dust and water jets, making it suitable for many outdoor spaces. However, the product shouldn’t be submerged. The solar panel, battery housing and connections need to be kept somewhere free from standing water.
During normal use, the solar panel provides the energy, so there are no ongoing mains electricity costs for the lighting. Actual performance and lighting time depend on sunlight, battery condition and the weather.
