Choosing a stool or step stool: a buying guide to sitting, storage and safe access

A stool can provide extra seating in the living room, hold shoes in the hallway or give you a little extra reach in the kitchen. But this versatility can also lead to the wrong purchase. A decorative ottoman isn’t automatically suitable for standing on, and a folding step stool won’t replace a ladder for every job.

Common pitfalls when buying

1. Treating weight capacity as a guarantee of safety

A stated maximum load tells you the weight limit specified by the supplier. It doesn’t, on its own, tell you how stable a model will be on every type of floor. For step stools, non-slip feet, wide steps, a stable base and a secure locking mechanism are also important.

For a seating or storage stool, check whether the stated weight capacity applies when sitting on it and whether the lid needs to be fully closed. For example, the JOYFURNOS storage bench instructions say to make sure the lid is fully in place before sitting down.

2. Assuming a folding design means it’s ready to use

A folding stool or step stool saves space, but its mechanism needs to lock securely into place. Before each use, check that the frame is fully opened. A model that folds flat for storage under a bed or behind a door is handy, as long as you check the locking mechanism and base regularly.

3. Choosing a model that doesn’t suit the space or task

A low footstool works well by the sofa, but won’t help you reach a high shelf. A 3-step stool offers more height, but takes up more floor space. An adult-sized model isn’t automatically suitable for young children. A children’s stool or Montessori learning tower should be right for the child’s height, have a suitable standing area and be designed for its intended use.

What to look for when choosing a stool

Seat height, storage and dimensions

For living rooms and bedrooms, stools around 35 to 45 cm high often fit in well with existing furniture. Footprint matters too: a long storage bench can work well at the end of a bed, but needs enough clearance in a hallway.

Choose a storage stool based on its internal capacity. Bedding, blankets and cushions need considerably more space than remote controls or magazines. Also check whether the lid is removable and whether the stool can be folded away when not in use.

Materials and care

MDF, steel, plastic, bamboo and solid wood all have different properties. A steel frame can provide a high weight capacity for folding step stools, while padding makes a difference to comfort when sitting on a stool. Keep bamboo stools away from excessive moisture and clean them with a slightly damp cloth.

For fabric covers, consider the colour, weave and how easy they are to clean. A teddy or linen-look finish may suit your décor, but it won’t necessarily be stain-resistant.

Safety features for step stools

Look for:

  • A maximum weight capacity that’s suitable for the intended user.
  • Non-slip steps and rubber feet.
  • An automatic or manual locking mechanism on folding models.
  • A base that’s wide enough.
  • Clear warnings about the top step and using the stool on a flat, dry floor.
  • For children: constant supervision and a safe distance from cookers, windows, stairs and sharp objects.

A 2-step stool is often more convenient for reaching lower cupboards. A 3-step stool is useful when you need more height, but takes up more space and should be positioned with particular care.

Choosing the right stool for each room

  • Living room: A seating stool, footstool or storage stool with a padded surface and a width that suits your space.
  • Bedroom: A storage bench at the end of the bed can hold blankets, cushions or clothes.
  • Hallway: Small, stable stools make it easier to put on your shoes. Make sure the stool doesn’t block the walkway.
  • Kitchen: For adults, a folding step stool or 2-step stool is suitable for reaching cupboards and shelves. Don’t stand on the top step if the instructions say not to.
  • Children’s room and family kitchen: Use a children’s stool or Montessori learning tower only under supervision. Keep hot surfaces and sharp objects out of reach.

Frequently asked questions about stools and step stools

What’s the difference between a stool and a step stool?

A seating stool is primarily designed for sitting or resting your feet. A step stool is for briefly reaching higher places and often has steps, rubber feet or a locking mechanism. Always check the product instructions to find out what the model can be used for.

How long does a folding stool last?

Its lifespan depends on the load, how often it’s used, the floor surface and how well it’s maintained. Regularly check a folding step stool’s locking mechanism, joints, steps and rubber feet for looseness, cracks or wear. Don’t continue using a damaged model.

Which stool is best when storage space is limited?

A folding stool or collapsible storage bench can be folded flat and put away when not in use. Before buying, compare its folded dimensions with the space where you plan to store it. If you’ll be sitting on it regularly, make sure the lid is stable when in place.
