Buying a Stool: What Matters for Comfort, Dimensions and Storage

A stool can provide extra seating in the living room, save space at your dressing table or make putting on your shoes easier in the hallway. It can also be used as a footrest, bedside table or storage unit. However, models vary considerably in terms of padding, stability, upholstery and interior space.

If you choose based solely on colour or price, you may overlook important details. Three common buying pitfalls occur particularly often:

  • Unsuitable seat height: A stool that is suitable for a dressing table may be too high to use as a footstool. In the hallway, on the other hand, the seat should be easy to reach and stable enough.
  • Storage that is impractical to use: Some storage stools do offer a compartment, but can be difficult to open or have very limited interior capacity.
  • Delicate upholstery fabrics: Velvet, corduroy or teddy fabric can look decorative, but depending on the surface, may be susceptible to stains and wear. Check the care instructions before buying.

The most important criteria when choosing a stool

1. Seat height and footprint

The seat height should suit the intended use. A compact height is practical for a dressing stool, so that your legs fit comfortably beneath the table. A living-room stool, by contrast, can be slightly lower and wider if it is to be used as a footrest or occasional seat.

Check the following before buying:

  • Seat height: Is it suitable for the height of the table or dressing table?
  • Width and depth: Is the seat large enough for comfortable use?
  • Footprint: Does the stool remain stable, even on smooth floors?
  • Weight: Can you move the piece of furniture easily when needed?

Depending on its design, a model measuring 37 to 48 cm in height can be used as a seat, footstool or shoe-changing stool. However, your height and the table you already have remain decisive factors.

2. Frame, load capacity and stability

For a padded stool, the frame material, leg construction and maximum load capacity are important technical details. MDF or engineered-wood frames can be combined with foam padding and metal or wooden legs. Figures such as “up to 150 kg” refer to the maximum load recommended by the supplier and should not be exceeded.

You should also look for:

  • non-slip feet or foot caps,
  • a level, stable base,
  • securely screwed-on legs,
  • assembly instructions,
  • an explicit warning not to stand on the stool.

Children’s stools often have lower load limits. For example, the Panda Storage Stool H36 has a specified maximum load of 50 kg and is intended for children aged three and over under supervision. It is explicitly not designed to be used as a step or climbing aid.

3. Upholstery, padding and care

A padded stool with foam filling offers a different experience from an unpadded wooden or plastic stool. Thick, resilient padding can make sitting more comfortable. At the same time, the upholstery should suit the intended location.

  • Velvet stool: Smooth velour surfaces create a decorative look but require gentle cleaning.
  • Corduroy stool: Corduroy can add a textured appearance and make minor signs of use less noticeable.
  • Pouf: A compact pouf is often suitable as a footrest or flexible seating.
  • Teddy fabric: The soft, textured surface works particularly well in bedrooms or at dressing tables, but should be protected from moisture and heavy soiling.

Many models can only be cleaned with a slightly damp cloth or suitable upholstery-care products. Machine washing is generally not possible with permanently fitted covers.

We have put together a complete, regularly updated list of products that fully meet these strict selection criteria and the safety regulations applicable in the EU.

How to position and care for your stool

Before use, the stool should be placed on a level, non-slip surface. On models with attachable legs, all screws must be securely tightened. Felt or rubber feet can protect delicate floors and reduce sliding.

For a longer service life, we recommend:

  • gently vacuuming fabric surfaces regularly,
  • soaking up spills immediately with an absorbent cloth,
  • using only cleaning products recommended by the manufacturer,
  • not using the stool as a step or climbing aid,
  • not overloading storage compartments with heavy items.

A storage stool should also be positioned so that the lid can be opened fully. In the hallway, it is advisable to leave enough space around doors and walkways.

Frequently asked questions about stools

What seat height is suitable for a dressing stool?

This depends on the height of the dressing table and your height. Seat heights of around 40 to 48 cm are often practical. The key is to ensure that your legs fit comfortably beneath the table and that the seat is not too high.

What is the difference between a pouf and a stool?

A pouf is usually softly padded and compact in design. It is often used as a footrest or flexible seating. A stool may also have a sturdy frame, legs or storage space. In retail, the terms are sometimes used interchangeably.

How much weight can a stool support?

Always check the product information for the specified load capacity. For the models featured here, the stated capacities range from 50 kg for the children’s stool to 150 kg for several adult models. The maximum load must not be exceeded; as a general rule, you should not stand or jump on a stool.
