Buying a stool or step stool: a guide for kitchens, homes and children

A stool needs to suit where you’ll use it, your height and the load it’s expected to bear. A decorative bamboo stool may be a good choice for your living room, while a children’s learning tower for the kitchen needs to meet different requirements. Many people end up with the wrong product because they focus more on the product photos than on the dimensions, weight capacity and stability.

Common pitfalls when buying stools and step stools

1. The weight capacity doesn’t match the intended use

A stated maximum weight capacity isn’t a general mark of quality. It simply describes the load limit specified by the manufacturer. A one-step stool with a maximum capacity of 150 kg may be suitable for reaching low shelves, but that doesn’t automatically make it suitable as a children’s step stool or a seat.

For a bar stool or kitchen stool, you should also consider the seat height, footprint and how often it will be used. For children, it’s important to check whether the product has been specifically designed for them.

2. “Bamboo” doesn’t always mean the same thing

If you’re considering a bamboo step stool, check the material specifications. A product may be made from solid bamboo, bamboo components or a combination of bamboo and MDF. The word alone tells you little about its construction, care requirements or resistance to moisture.

If you value traceable sourcing, look for a specific label such as FSC-certified bamboo. This should be stated directly in the product details, rather than inferred from the imagery or a general sustainability claim.

3. Adjustable height doesn’t mean complete safety

An adjustable-height learning tower can be adapted to different stages of a child’s development or different worktop heights. However, supervision, a level surface and adherence to the weight limit are still essential. Height adjustment doesn’t replace side supports, a stable footing or safe use near hobs and sharp objects.

The key things to consider

Height and dimensions

First, measure the height you actually need to reach:

  • 25 cm may suit low shelves or cupboards, or work well as a footrest.
  • A seat height of around 43 cm may be suitable for a round stool in a living room or bedroom.
  • A learning tower with a maximum height of 90 cm may be designed for use at worktops and sinks.

Width and depth matter too. A compact stool is easier to store, but may have a smaller standing or sitting area. A children’s learning tower should provide enough room for a child to stand securely.

Weight capacity and construction

Compare the maximum weight capacity with the intended use, and bear in mind that movement creates additional strain. Climbing up or down, or shifting your weight to one side, puts different demands on a stool than sitting still.

Check for:

  • the stated maximum load in kilograms;
  • the number of steps;
  • the width and depth of the standing surface;
  • secure joints between components;
  • guidance on using the stool on a level surface and checking it regularly.

A non-slip stool should come with specific information about its base or feet. Don’t rely on a marketing label alone to determine whether it has non-slip properties.

Materials and care

Bamboo is easy to care for when you follow the manufacturer’s instructions. For the products featured here, cleaning with a soft or slightly damp cloth is recommended. Abrasive cleaners, prolonged exposure to moisture and soaking can damage the surface or components.

Also check whether the product arrives assembled. This reduces the work involved, but you should still inspect it for cracks, loose joints or damage in transit.

Frequently asked questions about stools and step stools

Which stool is suitable for the kitchen?

For adults, a kitchen stool or one-step stool may be suitable if it’s the right height. Measure the worktop you need to reach and check the standing area, weight capacity and care instructions. For children, choose a learning tower specifically designed for them.

How long does a bamboo stool last?

Its lifespan depends on its construction, the load it bears, exposure to moisture and how well it’s cared for. Place the stool on a level surface, avoid leaving it in contact with water and regularly check the joints, for cracks and for the condition of the feet. Don’t continue using it if you spot any visible damage.

Are stools with a high weight capacity automatically safer?

No. Weight capacity is just one technical specification. You should also consider the height, standing area, materials and construction, usage instructions and intended user. A sturdy stool for adults isn’t automatically suitable as a children’s step stool.
