How to choose a storage stool: a buying guide for living rooms, bedrooms and home offices

A storage stool combines a seat with extra storage space. It’s particularly useful in smaller homes, hallways, bedrooms and home offices. However, many models look more alike in product photos than they do in everyday use. So it’s not just the colour and shape that matter: you should also consider the weight capacity, opening mechanism, internal dimensions and stability.

Common pitfalls when buying a storage stool

1. Confusing weight capacity with everyday suitability

The stated maximum weight capacity applies only under the specified conditions. A stool designed for sitting isn’t automatically a living room stool that you can climb or jump on. If children will be using it, it’s also important to check whether the model is explicitly suitable for their age group.

Check for:

  • the stated maximum static load,
  • a flat, stable surface to place it on,
  • non-slip feet or a stable base,
  • clear warnings against standing and jumping.

2. ‘Foldable’ doesn’t always mean ‘ready to use straight away’

A folding stool or foldable storage stool saves space, but its frame must be locked into place correctly. With models that have a folding mechanism, fingers can get trapped if the stool is opened or closed in a hurry. Before sitting down, check that all the sides are fully unfolded and securely in position.

3. The external dimensions don’t tell you much about the storage space

A large storage pouffe may have considerably less internal capacity than you expect because of its padding, frame and lid. If you’re planning to store blankets, cushions or books, check the actual internal dimensions or stated usable capacity. A removable lid isn’t a given with every storage ottoman, either.

What to check before you buy

Dimensions and where you’ll use it

Compact cubes with sides of around 38 cm are a good fit for a small hallway. A longer storage bench or blanket box bench, around 76 to 110 cm wide, can seat several people, but it needs more floor space.

Before you buy, consider:

  • Will the stool stay in one place, or will you put it away regularly?
  • Will you use it as a seat, footstool, surface or storage?
  • Is the seat height right for your sofa, dressing table or bed?
  • Can you open the lid fully without it touching furniture or walls?

Materials, care and surroundings

MDF or engineered wood frames can provide a sturdy construction. For velvet, polyester, corduroy or bouclé, follow the care instructions. Many covers are designed to be cleaned with a slightly damp cloth; soaking them, using harsh cleaning products or machine-washing them could damage the material.

A velvet stool or upholstered stool is generally intended for indoor use. Avoid moisture, direct heat sources and naked flames. If your stool has a lid, don’t store heavy items in a way that could make it unstable.

Weight capacity and safety information

Don’t compare weight capacities in isolation. A model with a maximum load of 135 kg or 170 kg isn’t automatically suitable for every use. The important thing is whether the construction, lid and feet are designed for the way you plan to use it.

Children’s products have particularly clear limits. According to the product information, the Panda Storage Stool H36 is suitable for children aged three and over when supervised, has a maximum capacity of 50 kg and is explicitly not intended as a step stool.

Storage stool FAQs

How big should a storage stool be?

It depends on where you plan to use it. Compact models around 38 × 38 cm are a good fit for small alcoves. A storage bench takes up more floor space, but gives you a longer seat and more room inside. Before buying, measure the available space, including the area needed to open the lid.

How long does a folding stool last?

Its lifespan depends on the frame, cover, load and frequency of use. Always unfold a folding stool fully and use it on a flat surface. Avoid overloading it, standing on it or jumping on it. Regularly checking the seams, feet and folding mechanism can help you spot wear and tear early.

What should you store in an ottoman?

Lightweight, dry items such as blankets, cushions, toys or accessories are usually suitable. Heavy items can affect stability, so only store them if the product information says it’s safe to do so. If it’s a children’s stool, don’t store anything that could tip it over or unexpectedly weigh down the lid.
