A string of lights can add decorative illumination to a window, Christmas tree, balcony or patio. However, light colour and design are not the only considerations when buying one. Unclear length specifications, misunderstood IP ratings or an unsuitable power connection can often lead to the wrong purchase.
This guide explains what private households in Germany should look out for and which type is best suited to each use.
A specification such as 5 m string of lights does not always describe the actual illuminated section. Some models also include a connection cable or lead-in cable. For windows, railings and Christmas trees, you should therefore check:
A 3 m string of lights with 20 bulbs is more suitable for smaller decorations, while longer models can cover larger areas.
The search term IP44 waterproof is often used, but technically IP44 primarily describes protection against solid foreign objects and splashing water from various directions. A light with an IP44 rating is not suitable for immersion. Battery compartments, plugs and connection points must also remain protected.
For an outdoor string of lights, the protection rating should be clearly stated. With a battery-powered model, the battery compartment must not be left in a puddle or permanently exposed to rain without protection.
A battery-powered string of lights can be installed flexibly, but it requires suitable batteries and regular checks. A timer can reduce the amount of manual operation required. A solar string of lights, on the other hand, needs a suitable location for the solar panel, ideally somewhere sunny. Charging performance may be lower in shaded courtyards or on north-facing façades.
For mains-powered models, the plug type, cable length and safe positioning of the power supply unit are crucial. Cables should not be kinked, trapped or placed in water.
A warm white string of lights at around 2,700 to 3,000 Kelvin produces a visually yellowish, warm light. It works well in living spaces, Christmas decorations and cosy outdoor areas. Neutral white or coloured light may be better suited to party lighting, children’s bedrooms or seasonal themes.
Compared with conventional bulbs, LEDs generally use little energy and produce less heat during operation. Even so, lights should not be covered or used near naked flames or powerful heat sources.
The number of bulbs affects how the light is distributed. Many LEDs positioned close together create a denser lighting effect. Larger globes with wider spacing look more like individual points of light and are suitable for gardens, balconies or parties.
The following simple guide can help you choose:
An indoor string of lights does not need to withstand the same external influences as an outdoor version. For living rooms, windows and Christmas trees, a model explicitly intended for indoor use is sufficient. For garden lighting or patios, check the protection rating, material, connection and mounting accessories.
The same applies to products described as weather-resistant: power supply units and battery compartments must not be submerged. Before each season, inspect cables, bulb holders and housings for visible damage.
Why this product suits this profile: The 3 m version with 20 lights is designed for smaller decorative areas such as shelves, windows or compact displays. Its pink design is ideal for adding colourful accents.
The clearly stated length and number of lights make planning easier and reduce the risk of buying a string that is too long for a small area.
3 m total length and 20 lights; eye-catching pink design for decorative indoor areas.
Why this product suits this profile: This meteor string of lights is designed for larger decorations on façades, trees or Christmas displays, with warm white LEDs at 3000 Kelvin.
The details of 15 hanging points, 70 cm spacing and IP44 protection make installation planning and usage limits easier to understand. IP44 protects against splashing water, not immersion.
720 LEDs, 15 hanging tubes, 10 × 0.5 m coverage and a 9-W adapter for 220–240 V.
Why this product suits this profile: This 5 m warm white string of lights with globe-shaped bulbs is ideal for balconies, patios, gardens, barbecues, weddings and party lighting.
The timer, battery type, bulb spacing and IP44 protection are all clearly specified. Even so, the battery compartment must not be placed in water.
10 LEDs spaced 50 cm apart, a 6-hour timer and operation with 3 AA batteries, which are not included.
Why this product suits this profile: This solar string of lights is designed for gardens, paths and patios where there is no nearby socket and a sunny location is available for the panel.
The sunlight required is taken into account when planning the installation. The IP44 rating is not treated as protection against immersion.
8 m total length, 50 warm white LEDs, solar panel, rechargeable Ni-MH battery and three modes: on, off and flashing.
We have put together a complete, regularly updated list of products that fully meet these strict selection criteria and the safety regulations applicable in the EU.
Before installation, the string should be fully unrolled and checked for damaged cables or housings. The following additional points apply to outdoor areas:
Consumption depends on the number of LEDs, power rating and operating time. With a mains-powered string of lights, the wattage stated on the product or power supply unit is the key figure. Battery-powered models do not incur ongoing electricity costs from a socket, but they do require replacement batteries. A solar string of lights charges its battery via the panel; the actual lighting time depends partly on the available daylight and charge level.
It is not possible to determine a product’s service life from its length alone. Factors include operating time, storage conditions, moisture, frost, mechanical strain and the quality of the cables and connections. To maximise its lifespan, store the string in a dry, protected place and check it before every use.
Only if the manufacturer expressly approves outdoor use and specifies a suitable protection rating. A purely indoor string of lights is not automatically protected against rain, splashing water or temperature fluctuations. For gardens, balconies and patios, pay particular attention to the IP rating, power supply unit, battery compartment and installation instructions.
