A sun hat with neck protection should offer more than an ordinary baseball cap on hikes, runs, fishing trips or holidays. It needs to cover your head securely, shield your neck and remain comfortable in warm weather. At the same time, many models are promoted with terms such as “waterproof”, “Cooling” or “UPF 50+”, even though their actual features and care requirements can vary considerably.

A waterproof running cap can be practical in light rain. However, the product name alone does not tell you how long, or in what volume of rainfall, the material will remain waterproof. Details about the outer material, seams and care are what matter. Some models only state that they are water-repellent. For longer trips in continuous rain, an additional rain hood remains advisable.
A UPF 50+ sun hat indicates a high stated level of UV protection from the fabric. However, this does not mean that every exposed area of skin is protected.
