Buying a Table Grill: Which Features Suit Balconies, Homes and Camping?

A table grill can be a space-saving alternative to a large freestanding barbecue. However, compact dimensions alone say little about how practical it is for everyday use. If you focus only on wattage, design or advertising claims such as “low smoke”, you can easily overlook important details: a cooking surface that is too small, heating elements that are difficult to access or plates that cannot be removed.

Before buying, you should therefore check three common pitfalls:

  • High power does not automatically mean more cooking space. A 2,400 W appliance may heat up quickly, but could offer less room than a model with a lower power rating.
  • “Easy cleaning” depends on the components. Removable grill plates and a removable fat-collection tray are more practical for everyday use than permanently fitted surfaces.
  • Indoor and outdoor suitability are not the same thing. An electric table grill may be designed for indoor use, while a charcoal table grill should only be used outdoors. Smoke, sparks and carbon monoxide make using one in enclosed spaces unsuitable.

The most important criteria when buying a table grill

1. Type of operation and place of use

An electric table grill requires a suitable, earthed socket and a stable, heat-resistant surface. For homes, kitchens or covered areas, an electric table grill is generally easier to handle because it does not require charcoal, ash or an open flame. Even so, hot surfaces and, depending on the food being grilled, vapour will be produced. Good ventilation remains important.

A charcoal table grill creates the classic barbecue flavour, but is intended exclusively for suitable outdoor areas. On balconies and patios, you should also check the building regulations, tenancy conditions and local fire-safety requirements. A lid and adjustable ventilation openings can make it easier to use, but they do not replace safe positioning.

When you are out and about, the transport format of a portable grill matters just as much as its weight. Fasteners, handles, feet and a sturdy construction are more important than an especially decorative housing.

2. Cooking surface, temperature control and power

The usable cooking surface should suit the size of your household. A surface measuring approximately 44.5 × 27.3 cm provides more room for several portions than a small round grill with a diameter of 33 cm. A compact model may be sufficient for two people; with several guests, a small cooking surface will increase preparation time.

On an electric table grill, temperature control is an important consideration. A continuously variable or multi-stage control lets you adjust the heat for vegetables, bread, fish or meat. Two separate heating zones are useful if you want to prepare different foods at different temperatures at the same time.

The wattage describes the electrical input power, not automatically the actual grilling performance. You should also make sure that the socket is suitable for the stated power rating. Extension leads and multi-socket adapters that are unsuitable for the appliance may create an additional load.

3. Cleaning, materials and safety

A grill with removable plates makes cleaning easier, provided the plates are suitable for washing with water or in a dishwasher. Before buying, it is worth checking the instruction manual: the main unit, cable and plug must not be immersed in water.

Useful features include:

  • a removable fat-collection tray,
  • a smooth or coated cooking surface,
  • controls that are easy to reach,
  • heat-resistant handles,
  • non-slip feet,
  • sufficient clearance from walls and flammable objects.

With electrical appliances, buyers should look for proper product marking, clear safety instructions and a suitable mains plug. The IPX4 rating, for example, means protection against water splashes from various directions, not against immersion in water or operation in heavy rain.

How to position and operate a table grill correctly

The grill should always be placed on a level, stable and heat-resistant surface. Flammable materials such as curtains, paper, upholstered furniture or decorations must not be kept nearby. With an electric table grill, clean the appliance only once it has cooled down completely. Fat-collection trays and grill plates should be treated in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.

A charcoal model must not be operated indoors, in a tent, in a conservatory or in poorly ventilated areas. On balconies and patios, pay particular attention to clearances, flying sparks and smoke. Do not leave the grill unattended while it is operating, and keep children and pets away.

Frequently asked questions about table grills

Which table grill is suitable for a balcony?

For many balconies, a compact electric table grill is a suitable choice because there is no fuel to store and no charcoal to dispose of. The key considerations are local regulations, the available space and adequate ventilation. A charcoal table grill is suitable only where naked embers are expressly permitted and can be used safely.

How much electricity does an electric table grill use?

Consumption depends on the input power and operating time. In theory, a 2,000 W appliance uses 2 kWh per hour when operating at full power. In practice, the heating element does not necessarily run continuously at full power after preheating. To calculate the cost, multiply the actual electricity price by the operating time and consumption.

How long does a table grill last?

Its service life depends on how frequently it is used, how it is cleaned, how it is stored and the quality of its materials. Removable plates should be handled carefully, and coatings should not be damaged with sharp metal utensils. Outdoor models will remain functional for longer if they are stored in a dry place or protected with a suitable cover. Before every use, check the cable, plug, grill rack and housing for damage.
