Choosing the right product can be the difference between an authentic flavour experience and a disappointment.

We will analyse the key characteristics of toasted sesame oil and present a selection of products distinguished by their specific properties and applications. Our goal is to provide you with objective information so you can make an informed decision for your kitchen.
To find the right oil for your needs, a few fundamental criteria are crucial.
The composition is a primary indicator of quality.
The colour of the sesame seeds used has a direct impact on the oil's flavour.
Toasted sesame oil is primarily a finishing oil. Its complex aroma is volatile and is destroyed by high temperatures.
Based on the criteria above, we have compiled a selection of products that cater to different needs and flavour profiles.

1. What is the difference between light and dark sesame oil? Light sesame oil is pressed from untoasted seeds. It has a high smoke point and a very mild, neutral flavour, which is why it's used as a cooking oil for frying and sautéing. Dark sesame oil, also known as toasted sesame oil, is made from roasted seeds. It has a low smoke point and an intense, nutty aroma, making it purely a seasoning oil.
2. Can you fry with toasted sesame oil? It is generally not recommended to fry with pure toasted sesame oil. Its smoke point is low (around 177°C / 350°F), and the heat will destroy its delicate aroma. For a quick sauté over medium heat, blended oils like the one from Lee Kum Kee are a better choice. For high-heat stir-frying, you should use an oil with a high smoke point, such as peanut or canola oil, and add the sesame oil only at the end.
3. How should you store toasted sesame oil? To preserve its quality and aroma, toasted sesame oil should be stored in a cool, dark place, away from direct sunlight and heat sources like the stove. Once opened, the bottle should always be sealed tightly to minimise oxidation and prevent the oil from going rancid. Storing it in the refrigerator is an option but not strictly necessary.
