Buying a Trolley with Wheels: A Guide to Choosing One for Shopping, Transport and Storage

A trolley with wheels can make shopping, drinks crates, parcels and household items much easier to move. However, shopping trolleys, transport carts and utility trolleys differ considerably in their design, load capacity and intended use. A model that is practical in the supermarket is not necessarily suitable for stairs, camping or heavy boxes.

That is why it is worth checking the technical specifications before buying, rather than relying solely on product images and advertising claims.

Common pitfalls when buying a trolley with wheels

1. Load capacity and storage space are confused

A large bag capacity does not automatically mean a high load capacity. With a shopping trolley, the stated capacity in litres and the maximum load must be considered separately. An individual shelf on a storage trolley or kitchen trolley with wheels may also have its own load limit.

Pay attention to:

  • maximum total load in kilograms
  • load capacity per compartment or shelf
  • the bag’s actual capacity
  • permitted use in hand-cart or platform mode

A trolley with a total load capacity of 15 kg is suitable for household items, but should not be equated with a folding sack truck designed for heavy drinks crates.

2. ‘Foldable’ says little about the packed size

Many models can be folded, but still take up a lot of space afterwards. For small flats, car boots or cellar shelving, the exact folded dimensions are therefore crucial. A foldable trolley should also open without excessive effort and lock securely in place.

Check the following before buying:

  • width and height when folded
  • the trolley’s weight
  • folding mechanism and locking system
  • whether the bag is removable
  • whether the handle suits your height

3. Wheels and brakes are judged solely by diameter

A large wheel diameter can be helpful on uneven surfaces, but it is not the only indicator of quality. The material, axle, bearings and suspension also affect how smoothly the trolley rolls. Swivelling castors are practical on tiled floors and carpets, while two larger wheels can offer advantages on kerbs or cobblestones.

Brakes are particularly important on a multi-purpose trolley or kitchen trolley with wheels. They prevent the trolley from rolling away unintentionally, but do not replace safe loading and should not be mistaken for tip protection.

Parameters you should compare

Load capacity suited to the intended use

For light shopping, a shopping trolley with a bag is often sufficient. For parcels, drinks crates or removal boxes, a sturdy transport trolley with a clearly stated load limit is more suitable. With a 2-in-1 transport cart, the load capacity must be specified separately for each mode of operation.

Also allow for a safety margin: regularly loading the trolley close to its maximum capacity can put greater strain on the mechanism, wheels and frame.

Frame and bag materials

A steel frame can provide high structural stability, while aluminium often keeps the overall weight lower. Alongside the material itself, tube thickness, connecting elements and axle design are also important.

For shopping bags, Oxford fabric such as 600D and a water-repellent coating are practical features for light showers and dust. However, water-repellent does not automatically mean waterproof. If you are carrying sensitive goods, avoid leaving the bag outside for extended periods.

Wheels, handle and stability

An ergonomic, height-adjustable handle makes the trolley easier to use for people of different heights. Depending on their design, TPR or EVA wheels can run more quietly and absorb uneven surfaces more effectively. A trolley with four swivelling castors needs a sufficient base area, while two larger wheels are often better suited to pulling over longer distances.

On a stationary kitchen or storage trolley, lockable castors are particularly useful. Also check whether the trolley is narrow enough for doors, narrow hallways and the space where you intend to store it.

FAQs about trolleys with wheels

How much load capacity should a shopping trolley have?

For ordinary shopping, the required load capacity depends on how much you usually buy. If you regularly transport drinks, pet food or larger parcels, choose a model with a clearly stated load limit and a sturdy frame. The bag must not be loaded beyond the manufacturer’s specified limit.

Are two or four wheels more practical?

Two larger wheels are often suitable for pulling a trolley along pavements and over minor uneven surfaces. Four swivelling castors offer greater manoeuvrability on level floors and are practical on a kitchen trolley with wheels or storage trolley. For kerbs and uneven paths, check the wheel design and ground clearance.

How do you care for a foldable trolley?

Remove dirt regularly with a dry or slightly damp cloth. A fabric bag should be completely dry before it is folded away. Check the wheels, axles and joints for foreign objects, and store a metal frame somewhere as dry as possible. With a foldable trolley, make sure the locks are fully engaged before every use.
