Choosing an upholstered bed with storage: what to consider before buying

An upholstered bed with storage combines a place to sleep with extra storage. In small flats, teenagers’ bedrooms and guest rooms, the space beneath the bed can be used for bedding, suitcases or seasonal clothes. However, models can vary considerably in their overall dimensions, weight capacity, mattress height and extra features.

To make sure a practical solution doesn’t turn into a poor purchase, don’t focus only on the fabric colour and LED effects. The construction, available space and specific features are what really matter.

Common pitfalls when buying an upholstered bed with storage

1. The sleeping area isn’t the same as the overall dimensions

An upholstered bed measuring 160 x 200 cm needs a mattress of those dimensions, but the bed itself will be considerably longer and wider. For example, a model with a 160 x 200 cm sleeping area could be around 221 cm long and more than 170 cm wide. A 180 x 200 cm upholstered bed can also be almost two metres wide once you include the headboard and side panels.

Before you buy, make sure you:

  • measure the space, including room to move around the bed,
  • take doors, radiators and windows into account,
  • allow enough space to open the storage compartment,
  • compare the overall dimensions, not just the mattress size.

2. Storage isn’t always easy to access

A bed frame with storage may have drawers, open compartments or a hydraulic lifting mechanism. Drawers need space at the sides and may not slide as easily on thick carpets. A hydraulic bed opens upwards, but needs enough clearance above the sleeping area and a correctly fitted lifting mechanism.

Check the stated maximum weight capacity. For example, a bed with a 160 x 200 cm sleeping area may have a weight limit of 200 kg. This usually applies to the total load, including the mattress and people.

3. Extra features are promoted more than they’re explained

An LED-lit bed may be controlled by remote, button or app. Claims such as ‘thousands of colours’ describe the choice of lighting, not the quality of the construction. If you’re considering a bed with USB ports, check how many USB and Type-C ports it has and whether a power adapter is included.

On the models mentioned, LED lights are for decorative lighting. USB ports are intended for compatible devices, but you should still check the power supply and cables for damage.

Key details to check before ordering

Sleeping area, mattress and slatted base

First, check whether the bed comes with a slatted base. The models featured here all include one, but none includes a mattress. The recommended mattress thickness can also be important:

  • The 160 x 200 cm model with hydraulic storage is designed for a mattress 20 to 25 cm deep.
  • The 180 x 200 cm model with an adjustable headboard is suitable for mattresses around 16 to 28 cm deep.
  • For the children’s bed measuring 90 x 190 cm, a mattress around 15 cm deep is recommended.

A mattress that’s too deep may affect the headboard or lifting mechanism. One that’s too shallow may sit lower in the frame than expected.

Frame materials and weight limit

Depending on the model, the frames combine metal, solid wood, MDF, chipboard or plywood. A sturdy feel alone isn’t enough; be sure to check the technical specifications too. Important details include:

  • maximum weight capacity, including the mattress,
  • slatted base material,
  • the number and design of the support legs,
  • how the side rails connect to the headboard,
  • regular checks and tightening of the screws.

An upholstered bed with a padded headboard is handy for reading or watching television. However, the padding doesn’t indicate how much weight the entire frame can support.

What’s included and assembly

Many beds are delivered in two or three parcels, which may arrive at different times. The products mentioned require assembly. For larger double beds, it’s a good idea to have two people, as the side rails, headboard and slatted base need to be aligned.

Before ordering, also check:

  • whether tools and assembly instructions are included,
  • whether wall fixings are recommended,
  • whether the bed will stand on a level surface,
  • whether the room you’ve chosen can accommodate the parcel dimensions.

Frequently asked questions about upholstered beds with storage

How much space does an upholstered bed with storage need?

As well as the mattress area, you’ll need to allow for the headboard, side panels and space to open the storage. Measure the overall dimensions of the specific model and leave enough room to move in front of drawers or along the sides.

Is a hydraulic bed suitable for everyday use?

A hydraulic lifting mechanism can make it easier to access the storage beneath the bed. Keep your hands clear of moving parts when opening and closing it. The bed must stand level, you must not exceed the maximum weight capacity, and the mechanism should be fully closed when the storage isn’t in use.

How much does it cost to run a bed with LED lighting and a USB port?

Running costs depend on the power consumption, how long you use it and your electricity tariff. Before buying, check whether information about the power supply is available. LED features and charging ports should only be used with an undamaged, correctly connected power source.
