Buying a velvet bed: how to choose the right size, material, storage and features

A velvet bed combines a padded surface with a distinctive look. However, product images can hide important details: will the stated size fit your existing mattress? Is a slatted base included? How do you clean the velvet? And is there enough room to assemble the bed in a smaller home?

Before you buy, look beyond the colour and design. The key things to consider are dimensions, frame construction, weight capacity, care requirements and exactly what’s included.

Common pitfalls when buying a velvet bed

1. Confusing the overall dimensions with the sleeping area

A velvet bed described as “140 x 200 cm” is designed for a mattress of that size. However, the overall dimensions will be larger because of the headboard, frame and, where applicable, footboard. For example, the URBAN MEUBLE model has product dimensions of 217 x 143 x 107 cm, even though its sleeping area measures 140 x 200 cm.

So be sure to measure:

  • the available floor and wall space,
  • the space needed for doors, drawers and folding mechanisms,
  • the route from your front door to the room where the bed will go,
  • the height of the headboard in relation to windowsills or sloping ceilings.

2. “With slatted base” doesn’t automatically mean “with mattress”

Bed frames with a slatted base are often supplied without a mattress. This is explicitly the case with several of the models featured here. Before ordering, check whether the mattress, slatted base, feet, LED components and power supply are included.

The vidaXL model is a box-spring bed frame for 90 x 200 cm, with integrated plywood slats. According to the product description, the mattress is not included. The URBAN MEUBLE bed is also sold without a mattress.

3. Extra features can affect assembly and day-to-day use

A bed with storage, LED lighting or USB ports offers added convenience, but requires more care during assembly. If you’re considering a bed with hydraulic storage, check in advance whether your mattress is heavy enough to open the mechanism as intended, and whether there’s enough room at the sides.

LED beds with USB ports also mean planning for cables, power supplies and sockets. Make sure the ports are positioned so that the cables won’t get trapped under the bed.

Key things to consider when buying a velvet bed

Size and room planning

A 90 x 200 cm box-spring bed can be a practical choice for one person or a guest room. Couples often choose a 140 x 200 cm velvet bed when they want a compact double-bed solution. Wider options are available for larger bedrooms.

It’s important to distinguish between the following measurements:

  • Sleeping area: the size of the mattress the bed takes
  • Overall dimensions: the actual floor space the bed occupies
  • Headboard width and height: important to consider in relation to walls, windows and bedside tables
  • Floor clearance: useful for cleaning and storage

Frame, slatted base and weight capacity

A bed frame with a slatted base should provide even support for the mattress. Check the frame construction, the number and design of the slats, and how the feet are attached.

Read weight capacity details carefully. The GTIMEX model has a stated static weight capacity of 390 kg. According to the product description, the URBAN MEUBLE model can support up to 300 kg. These figures are based on the manufacturer’s specifications; the mattress and bedding may be included in the total. Don’t try to estimate a weight limit if one isn’t given.

Velvet upholstery and care

Velvet can be made from different fibres, depending on the product. The vidaXL frame is listed as having a 100% polyester cover. Vacuum the surface regularly using a suitable upholstery attachment. Small marks can usually be treated carefully with a slightly damp cloth.

Avoid:

  • harsh cleaning products and bleach,
  • soaking the fabric,
  • abrasive brushes,
  • prolonged exposure to direct sunlight,
  • using untested products on visible areas.

An upholstered bed with a headboard is a particularly good choice if you like reading or watching TV in bed. The padding should be more than just decorative: it should offer enough support and be securely attached.

Velvet bed FAQs

Does a velvet bed come with a mattress?

Not always. Some of the bed frames mentioned here are explicitly sold without a mattress. Always check what’s included and choose a mattress to fit the stated sleeping area.

How do you clean a velvet bed?

Vacuum the upholstery regularly using an upholstery attachment. For individual marks, use a slightly damp cloth with a mild cleaning product. Test it on an inconspicuous area first and avoid soaking the fabric.

How long does a velvet bed last?

Its lifespan depends on the frame, fixings, weight load, assembly and care. Tighten the screws after assembly, following the instructions, and check the feet and frame joints regularly. For beds with storage, make sure the lifting mechanism can move freely.
