Clean windows without costly mistakes: How to choose the right equipment and accessories

Streaks on the glass, water dripping onto the frame or hard-to-reach exterior surfaces can make window cleaning at home unnecessarily time-consuming. For car owners, professional cleaners and DIY enthusiasts, the result depends less on advertising claims than on suitable materials, dimensions and safety features.

Common pitfalls when buying cleaning and sealing products

1. High performance figures are advertised without explaining how they apply

When it comes to a window-cleaning robot, high suction power may sound convincing at first. In practice, however, other factors are just as important: adhesion to the particular glass surface, edge detection, backup power, a safety rope and whether the device needs to remain connected to the mains during operation. A robot with an integrated battery is not automatically cordless. According to the product information, the battery in the PuRuiKai PRK-21B provides backup in the event of a power cut; the robot itself requires a power connection while operating.

2. “Streak-free” results depend heavily on the accessories and preparation

A window squeegee, window wiper or microfibre glass cloth can only work effectively if the surface is free from coarse dust and sand. Dry particles can cause scratches while wiping. Using too much cleaning solution can also leave a film, while a dirty rubber blade distributes water unevenly.

3. Universal suitability is often overestimated

Not every glass cleaner is suitable for coated, painted or matt surfaces. Before applying a product over a large area, test it on an inconspicuous spot. The same applies to sealing: waterproof butyl tape only adheres reliably to a clean, dry and grease-free surface. It is a repair and sealing solution, but does not automatically replace professional renovation work in the event of major damage.

Parameters to check before buying

Reach and working width

For standard windows, a handy window squeegee with a working width of around 25 to 35 cm is often sufficient. A telescopic window wiper is useful for tall windows or conservatories. Look out for:

  • maximum and minimum pole length,
  • sturdy locking mechanisms,
  • weight when the pole is fully extended,
  • adjustable working angle,
  • removable and washable covers.

The Blue Chenille Window Cleaner has a three-part aluminium pole measuring 51.5 to 110 cm and a cleaning head measuring 26 × 17.5 cm. This makes it practical for elevated surfaces when working from ground level, but it does not replace proper safety precautions when working at a hazardous height.

Materials and care

Microfibre should absorb liquid without shedding excessive lint. According to the product information, the Jeden Tag Microfiber Glass Cloth consists of 87% polyester and 13% polyamide. The cloth measures 40 × 40 cm, is designed for dry and damp use and can be washed at up to 60 °C.

For squeegees, an even and flexible rubber blade is important. Before use on car windows and wing mirrors, remove sand and coarse dirt from the surface. A car window wiper or wing-mirror wiper should not be dragged across the surface when dry or with excessive pressure.

Power supply and safety features

Before buying a window-cleaning robot, compare the details relating to suction power, noise level, backup power, edge detection and safety rope. The PuRuiKai PRK-21B is specified as having 2,500 Pa suction power, a 50-ml water tank, a weight of 1,300 g and UPS backup protection. According to the product description, the backup power lasts for approximately 20 to 30 minutes. Before every use, the safety rope must be attached to a secure fixing point inside the building.

Do not use such devices in the rain or in high humidity. Very dirty or greasy windows should first be cleaned while dry to prevent the drive tracks from slipping. For electrical products, details such as mains voltage, operating instructions, manufacturer and the EU responsible person are also relevant. Check that the CE marking is present on the product itself and its packaging.

A practical order for low-streak results

  1. Remove dust from frames and edges with a window-frame cleaner or a separate cloth.
  2. Apply a small amount of suitable glass cleaner to the glass. With Leifheit Glass Cleaner, 500 ml, the liquid should be spread across the surface and left to work briefly; it must not be mixed with other cleaning products.
  3. Use a clean window wiper and wipe the rubber blade regularly.
  4. Wipe away any remaining moisture and clean the edges with a dry microfibre cloth.
  5. Rinse the cloths after use and allow them to dry completely.

For car windows and wing mirrors, first rinse off coarse dirt, then use a soft car window wiper or wing-mirror wiper without applying heavy pressure. An extendable wing-mirror wiper measuring up to 98 cm is designed for hard-to-reach exterior mirrors. Silicone squeegees should never be used dry or over sandy surfaces.

Frequently asked questions about window cleaning

How often should windows be cleaned?

This depends on the location, traffic levels, pollen exposure and weather conditions. In many homes, cleaning as required is sufficient. Frames and heavily used areas may need attention more frequently than the entire glass surface.

Are window-cleaning robots suitable for every window?

No. They require a sufficiently smooth, stable surface, a power supply and correctly attached safety equipment. Rain, high humidity, wet glass or greasy glass can affect adhesion. Always read and follow the operating instructions and safety information in full before use.

How long do microfibre cloths and squeegees last?

Their service life depends on the washing temperature, cleaning products and mechanical wear. A microfibre cloth should be replaced when it sheds a lot of lint or no longer absorbs dirt. For a window squeegee, a hardened, cracked or uneven rubber blade is a clear sign that it needs replacing.
