Buying wireless Bluetooth headphones: how to compare design, battery life and features

Wireless Bluetooth headphones are practical in many everyday situations: while commuting, working from home, travelling, exercising or making phone calls. The choice ranges from true wireless earbuds to foldable over-ear headphones. However, eye-catching advertising claims do not automatically mean a product is right for you.

Three common purchasing considerations deserve particular attention:

  • “Long battery life” does not always mean long use per charge. With in-ear headphones, the stated battery life often includes the charging case. The earbuds’ actual playback time may be considerably shorter.
  • Bluetooth versions are often given too much importance. Bluetooth 5.3 or Bluetooth 5.4 can provide a modern technical foundation. However, range, codec support, smartphone compatibility and your surroundings also affect the connection.
  • ANC, ENC and passive noise isolation are different functions. ANC headphones reduce ambient noise electronically. ENC generally refers to microphone processing during phone calls. A good fit can also block out external noise through the headphone design.

The most important criteria for Bluetooth headphones

1. Design and wearing comfort

In-ear headphones sit directly in the ear canal and take up very little space. With true wireless earbuds, check whether several ear tip sizes are included. For example, the Hama Freedom Buddy II comes with silicone ear tips in sizes S, M and L. This makes it easier to achieve a comfortable fit for different ear shapes.

On-ear headphones rest on the ear and are often lighter than over-ear models. They can be suitable for the office, everyday use and short to medium listening sessions. An adjustable headband and soft padding are more important than having the smallest possible housing.

Over-ear headphones surround the ear. This often provides stronger passive noise isolation, although they can also be heavier and generate more warmth. For longer journeys, consider the folded size as well as the padding.

Open-ear models such as the Soundcore AeroClip or UGREEN HiTune S3 do not sit fully inside the ear canal. This allows you to remain more aware of your surroundings. That can be useful in everyday life, but it does not replace paying attention in traffic.

2. Battery life, charging case and USB-C

Always compare three details:

  1. Playback time per charge
  2. Total battery life with the charging case
  3. Charging time and fast-charging function

The Hama Action One, for example, is stated to provide around four hours of playback per charge and up to 20 hours with the charging case. According to the product details, the Soundcore H30i on-ear headphones are designed to provide up to 70 hours of playback. Figures like these refer to defined operating conditions and may vary depending on volume, phone call use and app functions.

A USB-C port makes charging easier because many current smartphones, tablets and laptops use the same cable. If you often travel, you should also check whether fast charging is available. The JBL Tune 720BT, for example, is stated to provide up to three hours of playback after five minutes of charging.

3. Microphone, ANC and connectivity features

For video conferences and phone calls, headphones with a microphone are not automatically equally well suited. Pay attention to the number and positioning of the microphones, as well as details about ENC or beamforming. The Soundcore AeroClip has four microphones, while simpler models generally have a single integrated microphone.

ANC headphones can be helpful with consistent sounds such as train or aeroplane noise. However, their effectiveness depends on the design, fit and surroundings. An ambient mode may be more useful for conversations or announcements. Headphones with noise cancellation should also not be used in situations where you need to hear your surroundings clearly and safely.

Multipoint allows you to connect to several devices. This is useful for professionals who switch between a smartphone and laptop. However, the feature should be explicitly listed in the technical details and should not be inferred from the Bluetooth version alone.

Frequently asked questions about wireless Bluetooth headphones

How do I connect Bluetooth headphones to a smartphone?

Activate Bluetooth in your smartphone’s settings. With true wireless earbuds, take both earbuds out of the charging case or open its lid. Then select the product name from the list of available devices. After the first pairing, many models connect automatically when switched on. If the connection fails, putting the earbuds back in the case or deleting the old Bluetooth entry will usually help.

How long do wireless headphones last?

Service life depends on the battery, charging cycles, volume, temperature and care. The manufacturer’s battery-life figure does not describe the product’s total lifespan. With built-in batteries, replacement at a later stage is generally not intended to be carried out by the user. Therefore, charge your headphones with a suitable USB-C charger, avoid excessive heat and store them in a dry place.

Are ANC headphones suitable for use in traffic?

Active noise cancellation can reduce your awareness of traffic, bicycles, announcements or warning signals. In traffic and other situations requiring increased attention, use ANC only in accordance with your surroundings or remove the headphones. Open-ear headphones let more ambient sound through, but they also do not replace paying attention.
